Wat zegt de wetenschap over Omega-3 vetzuren en specifieke gezondheidsindicaties?

Ons lichaam heeft omega-3 vetzuren nodig om in optimale conditie te blijven. Een tekort aan omega-3 - zoals in ons moderne westerse dieet - heeft een weerslag op de gezondheid. Een gegronde reden om de positieve invloed van omega-3-suppletie in gecontroleerde studies na te kijken! Uit klinische studies blijkt dat omega-3 vetzuren uitstekend verdragen worden.

Voor het behoud en de goede werking van de circulatie bestaat de eensgezindheid dat een dagelijkse inname van ongeveer 1 g EPA + DHA voor de meeste mensen volstaat. Dat omega-3 vetzuren eveneens een positieve bijdrage leveren tot het behoud van een goede gemoedstoestand, een optimale alertheid en betere leerprestaties is nog steeds het onderwerp van wetenschappelijk onderzoek.

Hieronder volgt een opsomming van doseringen per toepassingsgebied, één voor één gedistilleerd uit het recentste onderzoek. 

Als er meer wetenschappelijke gegevens bekend raken, wordt deze opsomming aangepast.

- Ondersteunt de circulatie : 500 mg - ca. 1 g EPA + DHA/dag (ref.1-6)
- Voor een goede beheersing van het triglyceridengehalte: 2 tot 4 g EPA + DHA/dag (ref.1,7)
- Omega-3 mag gecombineerd worden met cholesterolverlagende medicatie (ref.8) 
- Omega-3 is gunstig voor sporters (ref.9,10) 
- Voor een goede gemoedstoestand en een goed geestelijk evenwicht: 1 tot 2 g EPA/dag (ref.11-15) 
- Om geconcentreerd en alert te blijven en betere leerprestaties te leveren: 0.5 g EPA/dag (ref. 16,17)
- Tijdens zwangerschap en borstvoeding: minstens 200 à 300 mg DHA/dag tot 1 g DHA/dag (ref. 18-20)


Voorzorgen

Indien u allergisch bent aan één van de bestanddelen (vis, gelatine) neemt u best geen visolie-supplementen maar omega-3 van plantaardige oorsprong. Indien u een chirurgische ingreep moet ondergaan of bloedverdunners neemt, meldt u best aan uw arts dat u een omega-3 supplement gebruikt.
